IS THERE A MARKET FOR FAITH BASED,
HOPE FILLED MOVIES IN HOLLYWOOD?

Movie Guide, founded by Dr. Ted Baehr, provides movie reviews from a Christian perspective. The 2014 Movie Guide Annual Report gives insight to filmmakers like Higher Ground Films in regards to what today’s culture desires to see on the big screen.
Based on the top 25 movies from 2013:
- Movies with a faith driven, redemptive-based theme earned $87.07 million, while movies based on a non-Christian worldview earned $21.64 million. In addition, only four R-rated movies made the top 25.
- Movies without foul language earned $65.81 million while movies with more than 25 incidents of profanity earned $30.43 million.
- Movies without sexual content earned $51.15 million while movies with significant nudity or sexual content earned $24 million.
Today’s culture, despite it’s rapid decline over the last several years, is paying more money to see movies that reflect God’s character and attributes than movies which encourage a lifestyle of sin and rebellion to God’s character. Since faith driven, redemptive-based movies are attracting more viewers, does it matter that most of these particular movies are presenting a twisted biblical view?
YouVersion, an online mobile Bible platform, and Bible Gateway, an online resource and scripture reference platform in over 70 languages, released a couple of interesting tweets after the release of one particular movie, according to The Christian Post:
- "In the days after Noah hit theaters, people opening the Noah story in Genesis 6 increased about 300% in the US and 245% globally on @YouVersion." –YouVersion
- "Visits to the #Noah story in Genesis 6-9 at Bible Gateway saw a 223% increase over the previous weekend," -Bible Gateway
Cable TV is another vital outlet that identifies what today’s culture watches. Reality TV show Duck Dynasty has drawn the attention of millions ever since its birth. In the week of August 15th, 2013, Duck Dynasty became the number one nonfiction series telecast in cable history drawing 11.8 million viewers.
In Duck Dynasty, a family from the bayou sticks to the teachings of God’s word in their daily lives on and off the show. They pray in the name of Jesus at the end of the show. This show is being watched by millions of people.
There is a market for stories of hope and faith in Hollywood.
The 2014 Movie Guide Report, tweets from popular online Bible resources, and a family from the bayou validate our culture’s desire to see faith based and hope filled movies on the big screen.
We at Higher Ground Films recognize the fertile ground here in the US and around the world.
